課程簡介

本課程引領學員從頭入手,以莎士比亞劇集的文本為經,舞台演出為緯,冀能令學員從容了解和欣賞莎劇,從而提高英文應用水平。

莎士比亞的作品從不用詰屈聱牙的文字,詩詞對白甚至普羅大眾都能朗朗上口。學員在此課程中將被引導閱讀莎士比亞的三部非常出名的戲劇:威尼斯商人、凱撒大帝和馬克白。

透過戲劇閱讀和角色扮演活動,學員將會更了解莎士比亞戲劇的特點,從中學習一些深具特色的英語拼寫、詞彙和用典,英語精華,盡在其中,學員甚至能夠在這門課程中享受樂趣。

莎士比亞出身英國鄉間中下層,沒門路進牛津劍橋,為生活跑到倫敦,碰上了英國戲劇的創建時代。他加入了戲班,在之後的廿多年間寫了近四十齣戲,在他的喜劇、歷史劇、或是悲劇裡,寫盡人間的愛恨情仇,廟堂上的炎涼世態。憑他的文采,做出了雅俗共賞、丁財兩旺的成績。四百年了,每一幕仍是扣人心弦。

莎士比亞除了是劇集的作者外,很多學者都認同他對詹姆斯國王聖經的譯文,有一定的貢獻。後代文人,無不從他作品中取經。

Course syllabus:

Introductory lectures
- the historical background of Elizabethan and Jacobean England
- the mechanisms and conventions of Elizabethan theatre
- the peculiarities of Shakespeare’s language and dramatic structure
- the development of Shakespeare as a dramatist

The Merchant of Venice 「威尼斯商人」
- overcome the most common difficulties in learning Shakespearean syntax and usage
- understand the peculiar Elizabethan social and moral norms presented in the play which would be unthinkable to the twenty-first century audiences

Julius Caesar 「凱撒大帝」
- the veiled political parables of the plays will be studied, as well as its resounding rhetoric
- the rudiments and foundation of the Shakespearean tragedy

Macbeth 「馬克白」
- this mature Shakespearean tragedy will be studied which will serve as a hallway to other Shakespearean tragedies as well as his political plays

Instructor:Mr William Wong 黃馨先生

Mr Wong has obtained his B.A. in English and Comparative Literature and his M.A. in Literary and Cultural Studies from the University of Hong Kong. He is now an independent promoter of various performing arts programme in Hong Kong and East Asia.

Textbook

Students are advised to obtain for use in this course the three plays, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, and Macbeth from The Arden Shakespeare (Third Series) published by Bloomsbury.
